Petition: Repair and Reopen Brightholmlee Community Centre
The community centre is the heart of Wharncliffe Side, and its closure has left residents, especially young people and older residents, without an inclusive space for youth clubs, activities, and civic life. Residents are clear that it needs to reopen. I am committed to securing the funding needed to repair the flood damage and restore it as a true community hub.
We the undersigned support the restoration of Brightholmlee Community Centre
We, the undersigned residents of Wharncliffe Side and the surrounding community, call on Sheffield City Council and relevant funding bodies to repair and reopen Brightholmlee Community Centre.
The community centre was the heart of Wharncliffe Side, a neutral, inclusive space where residents of all ages could come together for youth clubs, activities, civic events, and everyday community life. Since its closure, our village has been left without that vital shared space. The church and the pub cannot fill that gap. We need somewhere that belongs to everyone.
Without the centre, young people have nowhere safe to meet. Older residents face greater isolation. Community groups have lost their home. The social fabric of Wharncliffe Side has been weakened, and we feel it every day.
Residents have been told that repairs to the flood-damaged building could cost around £40,000. That is a fraction of what this community is worth. The funding exists. The will is there. What is needed now is commitment.
We urge Sheffield City Council and relevant funding bodies to commit the resources required to repair, reopen, and sustainably manage Brightholmlee Community Centre, so that it can once again serve the people of Wharncliffe Side for generations to come.
Signed,
Residents of Wharncliffe Side
